An important note on this one: I was lucky enough to work at a music warehouse when this came out. Due to the type of cardboard used for the cover, A LOT of these had seam splits on the top of the jacket due to the weight of the record and how it was, inside it's inner sleeve, inserted into the outer jacket. Actually if you look closely at the image of the front cover in this listing you can see that copy has a busted top seam in it too! Unloading these straight from the distributor, I remember that the very inner copies in the master cases were ok, maybe because of the pressure holding the discs in place toward the middle. The outer copies had larger splits and they got smaller toward the middle. Anyone claiming a "mint" or "near mint" cover, you should ask for pictures, specifically of the top middle of the jacket. I'm guessing maybe 10-15% of the total run (at least initially, maybe they changed the packaging) would actually deserve that grade.

Are those 12 microtracks from the CD present in this vinyl release?

My favorite Silver Mt Zion release by far. Each song is so unique and powerful. I heard most of these songs live when they came to Dallas in 2012 and instantly fell in love with them (they played the latter 3 songs live). Definitely a must own.

well, this came out of left field. the one thing that you can say about this band is that they're certainly unpredictable. but, they tend to be unpredictable in a predictable kind of way.

everybody should have expected them to go indie rock, even though i didn't, although had i sat down and thought about it i probably would have. that's the first thing that should be stated about this record up front. this is not even remotely close to a post-rock album. this is straight-up, in your face and somewhat generic indie rock music.

as disappointing as that should sound, it's not actually a disappointing record. but, i've always liked rock music.

several of the tracks have riffs that sound as though they were lifted from zeppelin or sabbath tracks. the song structures are reminiscent of those deployed by billy corgan in the early 90s and robert smith in the late 80s. the epic buildups at times have an almost mid 80s U2 feel about them. yes, it's that much of a rock record.

but, maybe it's been way too long since a good, solid rock band even existed, let alone broke through into the mainstream. if, like me, you're completely disgusted by what mainstream rock music (which includes "indie rock" ) has become over the last 15 years, this may hit you with as much fresh air as this hit me with. it's been way too long since a rock band has been as blatantly uplifting as mt. zion are on the last track on this record. it's been a long time since a rock band has been able to throw a string section into a song without making it sound forced and contrived. i can't remember the last time that anybody was able to incorporate any ideas into rock music that were both new AND good. mt. zion delivers both on this record, which is in itself revolutionary, if not revolutionary on the scope that godspeed seemed to be on the brink of in 1999.

lyrically, they are blunt and focused but they're not tear-inducing. they're more angry than anything else but the feeling you're left with when the record is done is actually apathy. yeah, the bankers always win, the bastards. but, hey, some hearts are true and maybe that's more important.

this is one of the (if not the) strongest straight up rock records i've heard since grunge died. if they keep this up, perhaps the post-rock revolution will happen after all.....but perhaps it's going to end up sounding more like a cross between led zeppelin and, well, gybe!.

another way to look at this record is like this: if gybe!/zion were the pink floyd of the late 90s and early 00s then this is their dark side of the moon.
